Proposition 47, passed by the voters of California, took effect on Nov. 5, 2014. It is VERY IMPORTANT to anyone who has been charged with or previously convicted of ANY OF THE FOLLOWING CRIMES:
POSSESSION OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES
POSSESSION OF NARCOTICS
POSSESSION OF CONCENTRATED CANNABIS
GRAND THEFT (where the value is $950 or less)
RECEIVING STOLEN PROPERTY ($950 or less)
PETTY THEFT WITH PRIOR CONVICTIONS
These crimes, which were previously felonies, are now misdemeanors.
This means that anyone currently serving time on any of the above charges is entitled to re-sentencing in light of this more lenient approach, and could win their freedom fairly quickly with help from the right attorney.
Furthermore, any person who has EVER been convicted of any of the above crimes as a felony has a right to have their conviction record reduced to a misdemeanor. In some cases, this means restoration of many civil rights.
